RESUMEN

Anthropogenic noise from navigation is a major contributor to the disturbance of the acoustic soundscape in underwater environments containing noise-sensitive life forms. While previous studies mostly developed protocols for the empirical determination of noise source levels associated with the world's commercial fleet, this work explores the radiated noise emitted by small recreational vessels that thrive in many coastal waters, such as in the St. Lawrence Estuary beluga population's summer habitat. Hydrophone-based measurements in the Saguenay River (QC, Canada) were carried out during the summers of 2021 and 2022. Shore-based observations identified 45 isolated transits of small, motorized vessels and were able to track their displacement during their passage near the hydrophone. Received noise levels at the hydrophone typically fell below the hearing audiogram of the endangered St. Lawrence Estuary beluga. Monopole source levels at low frequencies (0.1-≲2 kHz) held on average twice the acoustic power compared to their mid-frequency (≳2-30 kHz) counterparts. The speed over ground of recreational vessel showed a positive correlation with the back-propagated monopole source levels. Estimations of the mid-frequency noise levels based on low-frequency measurements should be used moderately.

RESUMEN

The pandemic provoked by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) devastated poor urban neighborhoods across the world, particularly in the Global South, although empirical data on this remain limited. In this article, the authors present data collected through a mixed-methods, participatory action research approach on the impacts of the pandemic in Cidade de Deus, a "favela," or poor informal settlement, in Rio de Janeiro. The authors find that the indirect consequences of COVID-19, in particular economic and mental health problems, were experienced as more severe than the direct effects of the virus itself, despite high rates of infection and mortality. The study also revealed that residents relied heavily on one another through local systems of mutual aid to address immediate crises. These findings suggest that the pandemic provoked a complex and diverse set of challenges and actions in the economic, social, physical, and mental spheres of poor urban neighborhoods.

RESUMEN

ABSTARCTThe antibiotic amoxicillin (AMX) is a semisynthetic aminopenicillin, classified as an ß-lactam antibiotic. This work aims to evaluate the AMX degradation (190 mg L-1), in aqueous medium, applying photo-Fenton ([TOC]0 = 100 mgC L-1; FH2O2 = 3.27 mmol min-1; [Fe2+] = 0.27 mmol L-1; pH = 3.0; T = 40°C) and acid hydrolysis processes. Along the experiments, samples were withdrawn and analyzed by a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer and a liquid chromatography system coupled to diode array (HPLC-DAD) and mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) detectors. The hydrolysis process proved to be less efficient, because AMX removals greater than 80% were observed only after 24 hours of reaction (pH 2). Conversely, the photo-Fenton process removed completely AMX in just 20 minutes, reaching 85% of TOC removal in 2 hours. Finally, the AMX aqueous solutions treated by the studied processes was also evaluated in respect of its toxicity to some microorganisms, applying two antimicrobial susceptibility tests: disk-diffusion and broth microdilution methods. It was observed that the AMX aqueous solutions, pretreated by the photo-Fenton process, for just 7.5 min of reaction time, did not inhibit the microorganisms growth. The obtained results show that the photo-Fenton process was able to degrade AMX, in a relatively short time, and that the generated degradation products did not inhibit the microorganisms growth, when compared to acid hydrolysis process. Thus, it was verified the potential application of the photo-Fenton system as a pretreatment step to conventional biological oxidation processes for the treatment of industrial wastewaters.

RESUMEN

Purpose: Recent evidence suggests learning a motor skill with the expectation of teaching it enhances motor learning. The mechanisms underlying this effect seem to be similar to those of another motor learning condition, the self-control of knowledge of results (KR). Considering the similarities between the mechanisms that underlie these conditions, we aimed to investigate the learning effects obtained through expected teaching and self-controlled conditions, and whether these effects would be additive. Methods: Participants practiced a dart-throwing task under one of the following conditions: a) expecting to teach the skill; b) controlling the KR request; c) combining the two previous conditions; and d) receiving KR in a yoked condition with self-controlled participants. In acquisition phase, motivational aspects, strategies for requesting KR and aspects related to the expectation of teaching were assessed according to each condition. Results: Participants with control over KR and/or with the expectation of teaching the skill showed superior learning of the task compared to the control condition. However, the combination of the experimental conditions did not result in additive learning benefits. Increased perceived competence was found in expecting to teach, self-controlled and combined conditions, compared to the yoked group. Additionally, expecting to teach also affected the way and the frequency learners requested KR. Conclusions: Our findings provide important insights toward understanding the effects of expecting to teach, in addition to demonstrating that expecting to teach affects self-controlled KR scheduling and its use during motor skill acquisition.

RESUMEN

Anthropogenic underwater noise degrades the quality of whale habitats, affecting vital functions which may compromise the recovery of species at risk exposed to chronic vessel-based activities. The endangered St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) lives downstream from industrial activities in a highly accessible coastal environment. Many approaches were deployed in the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park to address the issue of cohabitation between whales and vessels. Place-based conservation measures aimed at protecting and restoring the tranquility of key areas of SLE beluga critical habitat by managing vessel-based activities were implemented through a marine spatial planning approach. They involved protecting the quietness of the South Channel by avoiding rerouting shipping, establishing of a regulatory area closure in Baie Sainte-Marguerite and of a beluga conservation area without commercial whale-watching in the Upper SLE. Compliance monitoring show that these efforts are effective to enhance the protection and restoration of the acoustic habitat.

RESUMEN

Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the clinical course of a newborn who developed dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) after COVID-19 infection. Methods: We retrospectively assessed the clinical notes of a pediatric patient with decompensated heart failure and who was previously positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Results: A 23-day-old newborn presented with diarrhea, hypoactivity, tachypnea, and lethargy. The infant progressed to develop respiratory failure and required orotracheal intubation due to apnea. A nasopharyngeal swab tested positive for SARS-COV-2. An echocardiogram (ECHO) demonstrated severe left ventricular dysfunction. The patient was discharged after 18 days with furosemide and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. During the follow-up period, the infant had two episodes of decompensated heart failure, with evidence of DCM. Investigations for known causes of secondary DCM were negative. The infant was promptly referred for heart transplantation. Conclusion: Although rare, we have observed a case of DCM in a newborn following COVID-19 disease. DCM may be a complication following COVID-19 disease in newborns.

OBJECTIVE: to identify nurses' self-perception about the factors that interfere with their mental well-being during the work process in an urgency and emergency hospital. METHOD: a field study with a qualitative approach conducted by means of interviews with nurses in the red wards (trauma and clinic) of a reference hospital, located in the state of Alagoas. RESULTS: there are several factors that positively or negatively affect the mental well-being of nurses, who work in urgency and emergency hospitals. The worker's mental illness process is unique, complex, and dynamic, in addition to being multifactorial. Thus, even with several negative factors found in the workplace, the positive factors can stand out and minimize the unhealthy interferences suffered by professionals. CONCLUSION: it is important that nurses and institutions are sensitive about this topic, which is still neglected, so that strategies compatible with the reality of each location and which can provide quality of life and mental well-being at work are built.

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary artery/aorta (PA/Ao) size discrepancy plays an important role in the development of neoaortic root growth and valve regurgitation. Since 2004, we started using PA reduction to manage severe great vessels root mismatch at the time of arterial switch operation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of this technique in the mid- and long-term follow-up. METHODS: Patients considered to have severe PA/Ao mismatch (>2:1 ratio) underwent resection of a 3- to 4-mm flap of the posterior PA wall. Patients submitted to this technique were followed up with clinical and image examinations. Echocardiographic findings were reviewed, and Z-scores were recorded to evaluate the incidence and progression of neoaortic root dilatation and valve regurgitation. RESULTS: The median (Q1-Q3) follow-up time was 8 years (3-11). Before arterial switch operation, the median (Q1-Q3) Z-score of the PA annulus was 2.90 (2.75-3.75). At the latest follow-up, the median Z-score of the neoaortic annulus was 1.34 (0.95-1.66). The mean difference between the Z-scores of PA annulus and neoaortic annulus was 1.56 (P < 0.0001). The mean value of the sinus of Valsalva was +0.29 ± 1, that of sinotubular junction was +0.71 ± 0.6 and that of ascending Ao was +1.09 ± 0.7. There was no severe dilatation of the neoaortic annulus, neoaortic root or ascending Ao during follow-up. Neoaortic valve regurgitation was none or mild in 93% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: PA reduction proved to be a feasible and low-risk procedure to approach PA/Ao mismatch in arterial switch operation. Mid- and long-term follow-up showed a tendency towards stabilization of the neoaortic root dilatation and satisfactory valve performance after the procedure. Further investigation is required with a larger population and longer-term follow-up.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To follow the visual acuity development of children exposed to or infected with the Zika virus (ZIKV) during gestation and to relate potential visual acuity deficits to their clinical condition. METHODS: In this prospective study, visual acuity was measured via Teller Acuity Cards in three groups of children: (1) those with confirmed ZIKV exposure (ZE) through the mother only, (2) those with confirmed infection (ZI), and (3) unaffected controls. Visual acuity was measured 2-4 times in each child during the first 30 months of age. RESULTS: The study included 22 children in the ZE group, 11 in the ZI group, and 27 controls. Visual acuity developed normally in both patient groups, including infected patients (ZI) that did not manifest clinical symptoms. In a small subgroup of patients with characteristics consistent with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), visual acuity was within normative values, with the exception of single child with chorioretinal atrophy. CONCLUSIONS: In this southeastern Brazil study cohort, visual acuity development seemed to progress normally in infected children without CZS symptoms.

RESUMEN

Abstract Considering the relations between play and child development and the marginalization of play at school, evidenced in previous studies, this case study aimed to analyze children's and teacher's participation in the constitution of playing in a public nursery school in Fortaleza. The following procedures were adopted: observation of the class (composed of 24 low-income children) routine; semi-structured interview; elaboration and explanation of drawings; story to be completed; and symbolic game, with analysis both of this game and of play experienced at school along with the children. Analysis of the data collected allowed concluding that the sort of play valued by the teacher is that which is planned and conducted by her aiming at learning and training skills. Free play, valued by children, is seen by her as "a mess." The absence of critical reflection on the adult-centered posture of society, plus to the scarcity of knowledge of the relations between play and child development, compromise the quality of the teacher's work.
